CS for CTE

The "CS for CTE: Endorsement, Expertise, Empowerment" grant-funded initiative is a year-long program aimed at providing educators with the necessary resources to deepen their understanding and technical skills in computer science. This APPLICATION is for high school educators who would like to prepare for the Virginia Computer Science PRAXIS exam, enabling them to achieve a Virginia CS endorsement.

Description

This is an APPLICATION for participation in the grant-funded project: “CS for CTE: Endorsement, Expertise, Empowerment”.

 

Selected participants will be notified by May 31st, 2023.

 

“CS for CTE” is a year-long NSF funded project that supports CTE-based Computer Science high school educators as they develop advanced skills and knowledge to enhance their teaching practice.

 

The grant operates in two phases for participants,

 

  1. Phase 1: gaining endorsement in Computer Science through asynchronous coursework and live online sessions to prepare to pass the Computer Science Praxis test (6 months), and

  2. Phase 2: personalized goal setting to craft and pursue advanced student learning opportunities in their classrooms, achieving these objectives through a variety of professional development and coaching initiatives

 

The CS for CTE project team is looking for qualified participants to commit to a year of professional learning (compensation provided through a competitive stipend). See the write up of the grant participant announcement here:

Prerequisites

  • Must be a current faculty member as a Virginia CTE high school educator

  • Must have taught at least one computer science course in the past year

  • Intend to continue teaching computer science coursework in future years

  • Work in a school that is considered Title 1, underserved, rural or of a similar designation

  • Must not currently hold a Computer Science endorsement

Audience

High school educators who are already teaching an introductory level computer science course through computer science CTE departments.

 

Knowledge Level

Intermediate - Participating educators need a basic knowledge and understanding of the CS SOLs.

 

Schedule

This is a blended course, with synchronous sessions every two weeks starting August 6, and asynchronous learning modules offered online in Canvas.
 
The course will take place from July 2024 through June 2025.

The course is broken into two phases (spanning 6 months each).
Commitment of 5 hours per week (both live and asynchronous components of the course).
Every Tuesday will have a synchronous session that begins at 4:30pm (see schedule below).
Travel, lodging, and meals for an in-person event on July 12th will be covered by our grant.

PHASE ONE COURSE FORMAT: 80 hours
